I can honestly see why these shoes are getting very popular among hunters. The speedcross also provides good traction, strong construction, and breathability. As I started hunting more early season hunts, I found boots to be overkill and started wearing mid and low height hiking shoes to hunt, but could barely get a season out of them.
Salomon Speedcross 3 Review
Typically the toe or sidewall of the show on the outside front edge would come apart from the stress of hiking steep slopes. I purchased these shoes over a year ago, having seen a couple of positive reviews on social media. The soles show minimal amounts of wear, the seams are holding tight, and the still seem quite waterproof. I like these shoes so much I wear them when I should probably be wearing a boot, but find the lightweight less fatiguing on very long hikes.
I would recommend the Speedcross 3 CS to anyone looking for an early season, lightweight shoe. Now if it only came in camo…. The only downside to the SpeedCross 3 CS is there is no ankle support, which is not expected from a trail running shoe.

The best early season shoe available. They are very light, and provide strong support and traction and durability.
As is rare in products, they do everything the manufacturer claims. The only reason I wouldn't wear this shoe is if you prefer higher ankle support. Nice review of these shoes. It is still overkill for my way of hunting and so a shoe like this seems to be what I need. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. They might not look like your traditional hunting shoe -- that's because they aren't.

Salomon Speedcross 3 CS
Grip provided by the large arrow shaped lugs on the Contragrip sole is unbeatable in all but the deepest and slippiest mud. From mud and gloop, to snow and ice these shoes just keep on gripping. Out of the box the shoe is comfortable and required very little bedding in time unlike most shoes. It also gives you a feeling that your foot is well protected and the soles have good cushioning for long trail and mountain runs.
The huge amount of padding in the heal of the Speedcross 3 means the foot is very well protected from impacts and means they are very comfortable for longer runs. The rest of the shoe is constructed from a a strong nylon material and has plenty of wrap around protection in the toe area making your foot feel well protected out on the trails.
The grip on the Speedcross 3 is amazing in wet and muddy conditions where they excel. They bite through the slime and keep you upright in the worst conditions. Despite the fairly padded heal and high drop there Speedcross feel very stable over all ground and give a very confidence inspiring ride.
There is only a small amount of noticeable twist because of this. I have wide feet so although I found the Speedcross 3 a comfortable shoe to wear overall the narrow toe box made them feel a little tight in this area although they did give slightly. It is a great all-around shoe that performs well on any soft trails where it can dig in and grip. It will even handle the odd road section or two but you can expect the treads to wear down quickly if you run on these surfaces often.
There is enough cushioning and protection should you decide to use it for for those ultra distance efforts or it would equally be at home on a quick blast on the trails.
The slightly more substantial construction means that its a warm shoe so is more suited to winter conditions that the height of summer.
Salomon employ a range of technologies to construct the upper of the Speedcross which improves the fit, form, weather protection and flexibility of the shoe. An anti-debris mesh covers the outermost layer which is a feature on many Salomon trail shoes.
Sensifit construction overlaps the top part of the wrap with a water resistant textile. A mud guard at the base of the shoes upper prevents water and mud from getting inside. The tongue features a gusset and Quicklace sockets. Deep chevron shaped lugs are the main feature on the outer sole of the Salomon Speedcross trail shoes.
As the lugs are widely spaced they shed mud very well while running. The outer sole utilises a blend of softer, harder and grippier Contagrip compounds to yield the perfect mix of performance and durability.
A great shoe for trail running in very wet and muddy conditions, they bit through the slime and provide amazing traction. They get real sweaty inside and my when braking downhill my foot starts to slip to the front of the shoe ouch! Personally I prefer the Fellraisers over Speedcross, but I do have wide feet and the Speedcross are a bit too narrow for me.
If you have narrow feet you may well prefer the Speedcross but I think it depends on what you want the shoe for. I think the Fellraisers definitely have the best grip. The lugs are harder wearing so dig in better.
I found Speedcross can wear down quickly if you run on harder surfaces. At the end of the day it depends on your needs and how the shoe fits you.The upper portions of the Speedcross 3 CS are where Salomon really added the technology. There is ample toe box room for the toes to comfortable splay out. The dense weave of this material does a great job of keeping the foot warm and dry. Unfortunately, this may be a concern when running in warmer climates.
The Quicklace lacing system does a great job of keeping the foot secure while also remaining snug enough to keep rocks, dirt, and debris from entering the shoe. The upper material will resistant the moisture of light rain and wet grass.
But those looking for a completely waterproof shoe may need to look elsewhere. The midsole of the Speedcross 3 CS is filled with plenty of EVA cushioning to help soften the blow of rugged trail running. This injected EVA runs through the length of the shoe from heel to toe to protect the foot more than previous Speedcross models. Salomon has also removed the dual-density foam that was found on the Speedcross 2. This may compromise the stability just a bit for some runners, but it makes it a comfortable option for those who have a more natural stride.
Salomon is banking on the EVA cushioning to be enough to protect the foot through the most rugged terrain. Salomon has always been known for its rugged shoes that can withstand rugged terrain. This reputation stems from their amazing outsole designs.
The bottom of the outsole has a chevron-shaped lug pattern. The raised lugs also have an additional rubber nub that gives even more traction when needed. The arrangement of the lugs also minimizes the amount of material that remains attached to the shoe.
Breathability is vitally important when running through particularly cold or hot climates. In an ideal situation, your trail running shoe should allow the foot to breathe in warm weather, but protect it enough in cold or wet weather. Salomon has included its Climashield technology that is designed to be breathable and quick-drying for the wet and sweaty trail runs. Some runners may find these shoes to be slightly warm when running at high temperatures.Hilmar was attentive and helpfulI emailed him and even called him using the toll free telephone number several times before going to work in the morning from New York, and he answered all my questions patiently.
The guesthouse experiences were great as were the tours. It was nice to meet some locals and learn more of the Icelandic culture through them. Everyone was very helpful and kind. There was no part of the trip that we did not feel completely comfortable with through your help. We will certainly consider the Nordic Visitor group for all of our travels to the Nordic area. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the guest houses.
The suggestions for the route was excellent and Erla Sonja was very flexible in allowing us to make changes to our itinerary. The trip was well above our expectation and we've already recommended Nordic Visitor to 3 of our friends. We travel all over the world and this was by far the best self-drive vacation we've ever had. We felt like a good friend was taking care of us. Our experience with Nordic Visitor was great. From the very first initial enquiry via your website, right through to the time we got out of the taxi at the airport to fly on to the next part of our trip, everything went smoothly and exactly to plan.
Hilmar was a delight to work with and it was really nice to have the same person from my first email all the way through to final documents and beyond. Our only regret was that he was in a meeting when we dropped into the office on our last day - so we didn't end up seeing him. Having that personal touch is a real strength for Nordic Visitor and it made the process of being able to customise our itinerary so much easier. We have already recommend your company to people who have asked about how we did our Iceland trip.
We absolutely loved Iceland (as you can probably tell from our comments. Our lodgings often exceeded our expectations (we pre-selected a moderately-priced package) and the day tours recommended to us were all top-rate.
Alexandra was perfect in deciphering the type of experience we were looking for. Our trip was absolutely magical. We only wish we had more than nine days to experience all the grandeur that Iceland had to offer. The itinerary, lodgings and optional activities that Nordic Visitor put together on our behalf were all fabulous and contributed to one of our best vacations ever.
We feel fortunate that we connected with Nordic Visitor and cannot recommend its services highly enough. All of our hotels were much higher quality than we would have booked ourselves. They were wonderful and the breakfasts were fabulous. The personnel were so friendly and often went out of their way to help. We appreciated the markings on the maps. The only bit of complaint we had was that the young man at the car rental did not give very good directions to the car garage.
It was hard for my husband to walk that far.
